2017 Epsom Derby latest betting - Cracksman shortened in the Derby after Permian wins the Dante

Franny Norton riding Permian win the Dante Stakes at York.

Whilst Permian struck a blow for the North of England by landing a brilliant victory in the Dante Stakes at York, the main market mover in the Epsom Derby market was Cracksman, who was withdrawn from the proceedings at York before the race.

Mark Johnston's Permian was largely overlooked in the build-up to the Dante Stakes at York, as the likes of Exemplar, Rekindling, Benbatl and forest Ranger all overtook him in the betting market. However, it was Franny Norton who had the last laugh, moving to the front of the field with a furlong to go and holding off valiant efforts from Benbatl and Crystal Ocean to win the 2017 Dante Stake.

The Dante is widely recognised as a key trial for the Epsom Derby. Strangely enough, Permian was one of the few entrants in today's Dante who didn't hold an entry into the Derby, but after his impressive victory, Johnston and John Ferguson - key advisor and executive to Permian's owner, Sheik Mohammed - both confirmed he would be supplemented into the Derby and has since entered the betting as a 16/1 shot with William Hill.

The main talking point before the Dante was the withdrawal of favourite Cracksman due to the unfavourably soft ground. John Gosden's charge beat Permian on his seasonal reappearance at Ascot in April and after Permian boosted that victory with a win in a Listed contest last month and his stunning victory in the Dante today, Cracksman's price in the Epsom Derby has been cut again. Gosden's Frankel progeny could have been found at 7s and 8s before the Dante, but now quotes are coming in from Ladbrokes of 9/2.

Benbatl ran a solid race in second, but was just found a little wanting over the final furlong. Saeed bin Suroor's charge has been cut from around 33/1 into 20/1 with Skybet and 16/1 with Ladbrokes.

Crystal Ocean's Dante price had been sliding all morning in the build up to his appearance at York and despite showing obvious signs of inexperience, he impressed more than most in the field and ran on well for third. Sir Michael Stoute will have been impressed with his youngster display and the bookies have been latching onto it too, with his price coming in from 20s with BetVictor and 16s with Ladbrokes into a general price of 12/1.

Joseph O'Brien's Rekindling ran a decent race to pass the post fourth in the Dante, despite being fancied by many to claim the title at York. He's slipped right out to 20/1 with bet365 from the 14/1 price he could have been found out this morning. Aidan O'Brien's Exemplar struggled on the soft ground and has also started to drift in the Derby market, moving out from 25s to 66/1 with SkyBet
