2017 Epsom Derby news - Mark Johnston confirms Dante winner Permian will be supplemented into the Derby on June 3rd

After his excellent victory in the Dante Stakes at York earlier this week, Mark Johnston confirmed Permian has been supplemented into the Epsom Derby.

The Dante Stakes has long been regarded as a key trial for the Epsom Derby and despite several good performances this season, Permian was one of the few Dante entrants not to hold an entry into the Derby going into Thursday's race.

Mark Johnston's three-year-old, who is owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, got off to a strong start at York and moved forward to challenge Benbatl with a furlong to go. He outstayed his possible Derby rival on the damp York turf, storming home to win a maiden Grouped title by just under a length.

Despite coming within a neck of beating Cracksman, when the Derby rivals clashed earlier in the season and an impressive Listed victory in his following appearance at Newmarket, Permian went to post in the Dante carrying a lengthy price of 10/1. Johnston will have been quite surprised to see his charge land the Dante title and after te race he expressed his delight in his young colt's early season achievements and confirmed he would be supplemented into the Epsom Derby.

“I’m delighted to have a live chance in the Derby,” Johnston told the Yorkshire Post after the race. "It’s a while since I’ve had a live chance in the Derby. I can’t say I was not fearing Cracksman (Who was withdrawn on the morning of the Dante) here. We held him in a bit and got first run at Epsom. He looked in trouble and he still managed to beat us. But Permian looked to have come on a lot from Epsom to Newmarket and he has come on again."

Johnston also revealed it was John Ferguson's idea to supplement Permian into the Dante at a very late stage and Ferguson, who works very closely with Sheikh Mohammed was also pleased to confirm Permian's Derby entry, who has now entered the Derby betting at an opening price of 16/1 with William Hill

"I spoke to Sheikh Mohammed coming down the stairs and he said he'd be happy to supplement." Ferguson told the Belfast Telegraph. "It sounds a lot of money, but in terms of what he's won here and from a bloodstock perspective it is worth it. Also, we have so many well-bred horses we tend to do it this way rather than enter them all early. When they win like that the decision is easy

As Johnston admitted, it's been a while since he has had to prepare a genuine Derby contender for a crack at Epsom Glory, but after that excellent victory in the Dante, both Permian and Mark Johnston seem to be relishing this monumental challenge.

“I wasn’t thinking of the Derby a few weeks ago, but you could see from two out today he was going to win. Epsom obviously holds no fears for us."
