Racing expert Matt Chapman has been giving the Paddy Power blog his expert tips on Saturday's Epsom Derby meeting.
Derby Day. One of the great racing days of the year and for punters around the globe simply one of the races that you get an extra thrill by picking the winner. Sometimes it’s obvious, other times it’s tricky.
Derby Day kicks of with a handicap over 1m 2f at 2pm, and I like the improving RESONANT, who has won his last two races for Mark Johnston. He’s up in the handicap, but I’m interested in William Buick being booked. It’s possible this might eventually become a Godolphin inmate.
It’s the Listed Woodcote Stakes for 2yo at 2.35pm, and BURATINO will enjoy stepping back up to 6f – the distance of his penultimate start – having been outpaced over 5f at Sandown last time. Again he’s for Johnston and Buick.
The Coronation Cup 3.10pm (Group 1) is always one of my favourite races of the season, but it’s fair to say this year’s renewal is not the hottest.
Lump on FLINTSHIRE, who often finishes second and was runner-up in this race 12 months ago. He’s been beaten by re-opposing Dolniya on his last two starts, but can reverse form this time.
It’s the ‘Dash’ over 5f at 3.45pm, and the draw plays a big part, with high numbers often favoured.
I like PERFECT MUSE, who was improving towards the end of last season and returned with a fine third at Goodwood, staying on from off the pace. They go hard here, and he might just come flying through late. Have a few quid on each-way where Paddy’s paying the first 5 home.
Finally it’s the big one the Epsom Derby at 4.30pm and I’m confident market leader GOLDEN HORN will not only stay the trip but hack up under Frankie Dettori. He looked a class act in the Dante and can cruise round before producing a telling turn of foot.
At bigger prices have a few quid on HANS HOLBEIN each-way. He will stay strong and has a similar look to Ruler of the World who took this race for connections a couple of seasons ago.
There is a worry he could get used in some sort of pace-making role, but let’s hope not!
So best of luck on a cracking day of racing. I’m out to get you Paddy. You hear me? Yeeehaaa!
