Dozen Fillies left in Oaks

The 2009 Investec Oaks has 12 fillies going forward following today’s six-day confirmation stage. The premier fillies’ Classic, which boasts a prize fund of £350,000, is run at Epsom Downs on Friday, June 5, Investec Ladies Day.

The two market leaders, Sariska and Rainbow View, remain engaged in the Group One, mile and a half contest.

Rainbow View, the best European filly last year, lost her unbeaten record when fifth on her seasonal debut in the stanjames.com 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 2 but pleased connections when working at Epsom Downs on May 28.

Sariska entered the reckoning for the Investec Oaks with an emphatic success in the Group Three Musidora Stakes at York on May, 13 while there would surely be no more popular winner than Midday, who is trained by Henry Cecil, seeking his ninth Investec Oaks success, and was successful on her latest appearance in the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial.

Two Irish-trained contenders remain, including the Aidan O’Brien-trained Perfect Truth, successful in the Listed Cheshire Oaks last time out. Jim Bolger has left in Oh Goodness Me, who finished third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas last Sunday.

Other leading acceptors include the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Phillipina, a fast-finishing second behind Perfect Truth in the Cheshire Oaks, while veteran handler Clive Brittain has two still engaged - Wadaat, the nose runner-up in last weekend’s Group Two Italian Oaks, and Nashmiah, a Listed winner at York on May 15.

John Dunlop and Ed Dunlop have both tasted victory in the Investec Oaks and the latest member of the dynasty to join the training ranks, Harry Dunlop, is set to be represented by Three Moons who finished runner-up last time out in the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on May 3.

Barry Hills is represented by High Heeled, while completing the entrants are the Richard Hannon-trained The Miniver Rose and Tottie, from Amanda Perrett’s stable who is owned by last year’s winning owner Julian Richmond Watson.

The final declaration stage for the Investec Oaks is at 10.00am on Wednesday, June 3.
