Godolphin supplement two for Derby

Fifteen three-year-olds remain eligible for Investec Epsom Derby on Saturday after Godolphin supplemented Rewilding, as expected, and Buzzword at Monday’s declaration stage.

Godolphin paid a £75,000 supplemental fee for both Cocked Hat Stakes winner Rewilding and Group 1-placed group stakes winner Buzzword. After finishing fourth in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas), Godolphin Racing Manager Simon Crisford said Buzzword deserved a chance in the 1 1/2-mile classic at Epsom.

“We have decided to enter Buzzword in the Investec Derby after he worked nicely at the weekend,” Crisford said on Godolphin’s website. “We have wanted to try him over a longer trip ever since he stayed on so well in the French Two Thousand Guineas. His work was strong and this has prompted us to go for the Derby.

“We continue to be delighted with Rewilding and also have Al Zir in the Derby. Riding plans will be announced within the next 24 hours.”

Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O’Brien has six colts eligible for the Derby, led by early favorite Jan Vermeer, whose price has dropped steadily with bookmakers since his clear win in the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes in his season debut on May 23 at the Curragh.

O’Brien also has 2009 European champion two-year-old male St Nicholas Abbey, sixth in the Two Thousand Guineas in his only race this season, Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Midas Touch, Dante Stakes winner Cape Blanco, Group 2-placed winner At First Sight, and maiden winner Bright Horizon.

Khalid Abdullah also holds a strong hand for the classic with Derby Trial winner Bullet Train and Dante Stakes runner-up Workforce.
